Dopo aver studiato alla Brewers' Company School, intraprese una brillante carriera che lo portò a ricoprire la carica di segretario di importanti imprese finanziarie. Nel 1905 venne nominato membro del Chartered Institute of Secretaries. Fu segretario della Venture Corporation Ltd - che nel 1908 confluì nella London Venture Corporation insieme alla Mines Corporation of New Zealand e alla London and Continental Investment Corporation - società londinese che aveva interessi in varie parti del mondo, tra cui Oceania, Madagascar, Russia e Norvegia.
Era appassionato di automobilismo.
